WWE Summer Slam

WWE SummerSlam is a yearly professional wrestling pay-per-view event held in August and is called “The Biggest Party of the Summer.” SummerSlam is one of the “Big Four” pay-per-view events, along with WrestleMania, Royal Rumble and Survivor Series, and was part of the original 4 yearly WWE pay-per-views. In the late 1980s, Vince McMahon’s WWF’s major competition was from Jim Crockett Promotions. McMahon responded to Crockett’s successful Starrcade pay-per-view with the WrestleMania franchise. After WrestleMania III, which was the most successful professional wrestling pay-per-view event in history, McMahon started the Survivor Series, which was broadcast on the same day as Starrcade ’87 in November 1987. After beating Crockett in ratings, McMahon came up with the Royal Rumble, a free event airing on the USA Network in January 1988. >> More alt

About WWE Summer Slam

As retaliation, Crockett started the Clash of the Champions, which was broadcast simultaneously with WrestleMania IV, which got higher ratings. Not long after this, Crockett sold his company to Ted Turner, who renamed it World Championship Wrestling. Adding onto his lineup of WrestleMania in March, the Royal Rumble in January and Survivor Series in November, McMahon came up with an event for August, which he called SummerSlam. Turner started airing monthly WCW pay-per-views so WWF wouldn’t have a PPV monopoly. SummerSlam became one of WWF’s most successful events and one of the “Big Four” pay-per-views. The “Big Four” and King of the Ring make up what is known as the “Classic Five.” The first SummerSlam was held in New York City’s Madison Square Garden on August 29, 1988. In 2002, WWE started a brand extension, in which the roster was split between Raw and SmackDown! Also, wrestlers and pay-per-views were made exclusive to one of the 2 brands. Because of this, SummerSlam, WrestleMania, the Royal Rumble and Survivor Series were the only 4 events where wrestlers competed from both brands.
