Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW)

Extreme Championship Wrestling or ECW was a professional wrestling campaign established by Tod Gordon in Philadelphia, PA in 1992 and it closed when Paul Heyman, his successor declared bankruptcy in April 2001. ECW technically had its start in 1991 under the name Tri-State Wrestling Alliance, which was owned by Joel Goodhart. Goodhart sold his share of the company to Gordon; Gordon then renamed the campaign Eastern Championship Wrestling. When it was established, it was part of the National Wrestling Alliance or NWA. >> More alt

About Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW)

After Gordon had a fight with his head booker, Eddie Gilbert, he chose to replace him with Heyman, who was Gilbert’s friend and a WCW alumnus. Heyman’s first show was NWA Clash ’93 on September 18, 1993 at Viking Hall, which was eventually renamed The ECW Arena in Philadelphia.

In 1994, the ECW pulled out of the NWA and changed its name to Extreme Championship Wrestling. After this happened, it became an underground phenomenon. Because of the unconventional movements, controversial story lines and strong blood thirst, ECW became extremely popular among wrestling fans in the 18 to 25 range. Even though its fan base was small, it became almost cult-like in the late 90s and even motivated other campaigns, like WWF and WCW, to use the “hardcore style.” It became well known for its devoted fan base and the tendency to overwork storylines.

This group has showcased a lot of different professional wrestling styles from lucha libre to hardcore wrestling. World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE bought rights to ECW and its library after it closed in 2001. It also renewed the campaign in a permanent fashion on June 13, 2006. It started a weekly series on the SciFi Channel in the US, FOX8 in Australia, SIC Radical in Portugal and Sky Sports 3 in the UK. In 2005 and 2006, WWE endorsed an ECW-type event called ECW One Night Stand. In June 2006, it became a separate kind of WWE programming, like Raw and SmackDown!
