ecw live

Most ECW shows stayed at the ECW Arena, which is a ramshackle bingo hall tucked away under a section of Interstate 95. The shows were broadcast on a local Philadelphia cable sports station (Sports Channel Philadelphia) on Tuesday evenings. Once Sports Channel Philadelphia went off the air, the show was taken up by WPPX-TV 61 and later went to a former independent broadcast station, WGTW 48, in Philadelphia. Because of the stations’ and ECW’s anonymity and the lack of the FCC’s oversight at late hours, a lot of curses and violence weren’t edited out of the shows, which helped get ECW noticed. >> More alt

About ecw live

Vince McMahon first became aware of ECW when he was at the King of the Ring event in Philadelphia in 1995. At the In Your House: Mind Games event in Philadelphia on September 22, 1996, he acknowledged its status as a local up and coming campaign on the air. ECW invaded RAW at the Manhattan Center in New York on February 24, 1997. They got their first pay-per-view ever and even got in 3 matches before the WWF audience; McMahon, Jerry “The King” Lawler and Paul Heyman were the announcers. After some struggles, ECW aired its first pay-per-view event called Barely Legal at last on April 13, 1997; it featured Terry Funk winning the ECW World Heavyweight title from Raven. Two months later, Wrestlepalooza ’97 included Raven’s last ECW match before he left for WCW. Tommy Dreamer at last defeated Raven, his long time adversary.

Dreamer’s celebration was brief, though, because Lawler, Sabu and Rob Van Dam attacked him, which set up a match between Dreamer and Lawler at ECW’s 2nd pay-per-view called 1997 Hardcore Heaven on August 17; Dreamer won the event. ECW went through 1998 and early 99 with successful pay-per-views. The company started broadcasting nationally on TNN in August 1999. It was cancelled in October 2000 and was replaced by WWF RAW.
