About Shubert Theater-ct

The Shubert Theater, Connecticut is in quite close proximity to New York City and therefore had always been a preferred choice for producers who wanted to give their creations a test-run before releasing it on the prestigious Broadway. The Broadway show 'A Streetcar Named Desire' was premiered at the Shubert Theater in 1947 and it marked the rise of the play itself and also the Hollywood legend, Marlon Brando. The Shubert Theater, Connecticut has been host to numerous legends, such as Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Andy Griffith, Sidney Poitier, and even former first lady Nancy Reagan.

The era of 1970s, saw the downfall of the Shubert Theater begin and by 1976 it was closed down and was under the threat of demolition. However, the city of New Haven came to its rescue. It bought the ailing theater and had it refurbished. Later, the local community members created a non-profit organization known as the Shubert Performing Arts Center Inc., that took care of the Shubert Theater, Connecticut for the next eighteen years.
