Opened on October 16, 1921, Orpheum Theatre MN was built with a cost of over 1$ million and was originally named the Hennepin Theater. Actually, the theater has two separate structures - a long, fingerlike lobby that extends back from the Hennepin Avenue and the well maintained auditorium. The restored lobby of the Orpheum Theatre MN has six terra cotta bas-relief sculptures, while the interior of the auditorium is intricately plastered, with a number of garlands, swags and medallions along with other decorations. The ceiling of the Orpheum Theatre MN has a dome like shape highlighted with 30,000 squares of aluminum leaf.
While the main floor of the Orpheum Theatre MN accommodates 1500-seats, an additional 1100 spectators can be accommodated on the three level balcony. With the end of the vaudeville era, the Orpheum Theatre MN was transformed to a first run movie venue. After an extensive renovation that took place in 1993 the Orpheum Theatre MN is still popular as a concert, Broadway plays and dance venue in the whole of Minneapolis area.
