It is located on the southeast side of the UW campus in Madison. The building is named after U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl for his generation donation of $25 million for the project. The most striking feature of the Kohl Center is the flexibility in the seating capacity with the help of which it can be rearranged to accommodate a basketball court, a hockey rink or a concert. The seating capacity is 17,142 for basketball matches, with approximately 7,500 seats in the lower seating bowl and 4,500 in each of the two balconies. As the design of the Kohl Center is very unique with two overhanging balconies, no matter where one sits, it promises an excellent view of the ground. The state-of-the-art facilities of the Kohl Center seat approximately 14,000 for hockey and something in between 15,000 and 17,000 for concerts or live shows.
Apart from basketball and ice hockey, the Kohl Center hosts many other events during the school year and summertime. The most notable ones amongst them are the commencement ceremonies for both the UW as well as Madison high schools, special concerts by well known names from the entertainment world, ice skating shows, career fairs, political gatherings and various levels of convention programs. It has also hosted prestigious sporting events like the NCAA women's volleyball national championship and an NCAA men's basketball regional championship.
