The Academy of Music is the oldest opera house in America. It is commonly known as the American Academy of Music, which is located in Philadelphia. The venue was the home for the world famous Philadelphia Orchestra for 101 years.

The grand opera house was opened on January 26, 1857. The American premier of Verdi's “II trovatore” was the first opera hosted by the American Academy of Music on February 25 in the same year. Some other operas that had their American premier at the venue were Gounod's “Faust”, Strauss' “Ariadne auf Naxos” and Wagner's “The Flying Dutchman”. Marian Anderson, Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, Aaron Copland, Vladimir Horowitz, Gustav Mahler, Anna Pavlova, Luciano Pavarotti, Itzhak Perlman, Leontyne Price, Artur Rubinstein, Isaac Stern, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Joan Sutherland and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky were among the great artists who have performed at the venue in its rich past.
The Philadelphia Orchestra Association owns the American Academy of Music. It is managed by the Kimmen Center for the Performing Arts. The venue has been the home for the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Peter Nero & Philly Pops.
