The Tropicana Field was opened in 1990 as the Florida Suncoast Dome. In 1993, when the NHL's team the Tampa Bay Lightning made the stadium its home, it became the Thunderdome. It was renamed as the Tropicana Field on October 4, 1996.

The stadium has been the home to the MLB's Tampa Bay Rays since 1998. The Tampa Bay Rays played their inaugural game against the Detroit Tigers at the stadium on March 31, 1998. Along with playing host to the team, the Tropicana Field also hosts a number of concerts and non-baseball sporting events.
The Tropicana Field features the largest cable supported roof in the world. The roof with 180 miles of cable is covered by six acres of fiberglass. The stadium can seat nearly 45, 360 spectators. During any game or event, the visitors can experience various concessions at the field. There are three restaurants and a shopping plaza, where they can have official soft drinks and delicacies with lots of fun. The Ted Williams Museum was also shifted to the Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg from Hernando, Florida in 2006. It remains open during the game days.
