The story revolves around the life and times of young Cyrano de Bergerac, a talented, brash young man who excels in a number of fields. He is an exemplary poet, a talented musician and a formidable soldier but there is one thing that Cyrano deems a blight on himself and that is his very large nose. It becomes a focal point for his shortcomings- though Cyrano has fallen deeply in love with his cousin Roxane, he firmly believes that she could never love a man as ugly as himself.
Nevertheless, Cyrano works up the courage to tell her his love, only to have her tell him that she is in love with his friend, the handsome Christian. Cyrano puts up a brave front, promising to protect Christian in battle and to work as a go-between to facilitate the love between the two. He finds out that Christian too is in love with Roxane but is all thumbs when it comes to romance. With Cyrano's passionate words that stem from the depths of his own desperate, unrequited love and Christian's handsome looks, the two create the perfect romantic hero. Their efforts come to a peak when Cyrano woos Roxane on her balcony in the guise of Christian.
Problems arise when Cyrano and Christian are sent to battle, during which Cyrano writes Roxane a number of passionate letters in Christian's name. Roxane finally comes to see them and says that she has fallen in love with Christian's soul and would love him no matter how he looked. Christian begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth but Christian falls in battle and Cyrano's pride and honor prevent him from telling the truth. Years later, Cyrano has fallen on hard times but insists on regularly visiting Roxane who is in mourning. One day she realizes that it has been Cyrano who has loved her all along and that she loves him. Unfortunately it is too late- a mortal wound that Cyrano has kept hidden and his own unstable health kill him in the end.
