Cry-Baby

Cry-Baby is a musical that was made in 1990 and was directed by John Waters. Johnny Depp starred as the 1950s teen rebel Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker; the cast included Iggy Pop, Traci Lords, Ricki Lake, David Nelson, Susan Tyrrell and Patty Hearst. It’s a spoof on teen musicals like Grease, all Elvis Presley movies and the 1950s “juvenile delinquent” movies. More than once, Johnny Depp said he took the role to make fun of all the teen-idol craziness that surrounded him while he was on the TV show, 21 Jump Street. Part of the movie was filmed at the Enchanted Forest amusement park in Elliott City, MD, which is now closed. It focuses on a gang of delinquents called the Drapes and the way they interact with the rest of the townspeople of Baltimore, MD and the other group called the Squares; it’s set in the 1950s. “Cry-Baby” Walker, who is a Drape, falls in love with Allison, who is a Square, and they create quite a disturbance in the town because they broke the subculture restrictions; the movie shows what they have to deal with to be together and how what they do affects the whole town. >> More alt

About Cry-Baby

Cry-baby is the 2nd Waters’ film to be modified as a musical comedy for the stage (the first was Hairspray). California’s La Jolla Playhouse produced the musical for their 2007 season; also, it was shadow-cast by Sins O’ the Flesh at the Nuart Theatre. The musical’s world premiere was at the La Jolla Playhouse on November 6, 2007 and ran until December 16. Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan wrote the musical’s book, Adam Schlesinger wrote the music, David Javerbaum wrote the lyrics, Mark Brokaw directed and Rob Ashford choreographed. Harriet Harris, Carly Jibson and James Snyder, who plays “Cry-Baby,” are all part of the cast. Previews will start on Broadway at the Marquis Theatre in March 2008 and the musical will officially open in April.
