Wicked the Musical is a Broadway production adopted from Gregory Maguire’s book by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman. Based on Wicked: the Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, this is the origin story of the green-skinned girl who would become the most feared woman in the Land of Oz. Her name is Elphaba and she arrives at university a shy girl unaware of her true powers. She discovers those powers, as well as friendship and love. The pivotal relationship is that of Elphaba and Glinda, the future Good Witch of the North. Glinda starts out as Galinda, a wicked girl forever obsessed with popularity. Both characters grow, finding power and meaning beneath surface.

Elphaba and Glinda’s personal journey is set against a political backdrop, with the powers that be intent on stealing animals’ ability to talk and trying to use Elphaba’s true magical power to do so. She refrains and fights and becomes the scapegoat for a much larger conspiracy.
