The Thirty-nine Steps is often abbreviated to The 39 Steps, it was an adventure novel authored by John Buchan of Scotland. He was ill because of duodenal ulcer and told to take proper bed rest, when he wrote this novel. This novel was published for the first time by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh, in the year 1915. This novel has to be the first of five novels John wrote, where he introduced Richard Hannay. This character is supposed to be an all-action hero, who has a stiff upper lip and a miraculous art to pull himself out from the most sticky situations. The author keeps this novel the closest to his heart and he calls it as his first “shocker”.
