Oscar Wilde was not well versed in French so this play was proofread and finally corrected by Marcel Schwob. The story of the play deals with the life of King Herod. King Herod has unquenched lust for his fourteen years old innocent step-daughter, Salome.
On the other hand Salome has stooped for Jokannan or John the Baptist. Though, he clearly rejects her lusty advances towards him. Well, this really caused a rage in Salome. Internally she burns with the sheer love and desire for Jokanaan. This desire made her dance before Herod.
Then she asks head of Jokanaan for the reward which caused a stir among the audiences. This play saw its Broadway production with the great star cast including Marisa Tomei as the principal character and Al Pacino as King Herod. It was premiered on April 30, 2004. Well, the rest of the cast comprised of David Strathaim as Jokanaan and Dianne Wiest as Herod's wife Herodias.
