Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages is a rock musical, set in 1980s Hollywood when big hair, big chords, and big dreams were all the rock-and-roll rage. Utilizing just about every '80s rock cliché in the book, Rock of Ages is gratuitous silliness at its best. Take a leap into a living, breathing music video, while the show races along high on nostalgia and hairspray, while never taking itself too seriously. Between the live onstage band, the playlist of karaoke classics, and in-seat cocktail service, audience participation is definitely encouraged. >> More alt

About The Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages explores the pursuit of dreams, while telling a story through the hits of many legendary groups and rockers of that time. Take yourself back to the end of the 1980s in Hollywood, where the party is raging hard, and hairspray, Spandex, lingerie, and alcohol, are flowing freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues – a placed where Stacee Jaxx takes the stage while scantily clad groupies line up hoping their fantasies of him will come true. In the middle of the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew, longs to one day emerge onstage as the next big thing, while also getting the small-town girl, Sherri, who is fresh off a bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes. Will the rock-and-roll fable be crushed as German developers come to town with plans of turning the fabled Strip into just another strip mall, or can Drew, Sherri, and the gang save the Strip, and themselves, before it's too late? The answers to those questions can be found in the music of Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, and Whitesnake, to name a few.

The musical premiered in Los Angeles, playing six weeks at The Vanguard Hollywood in January 2006, and with Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde) playing the role of Sherrie. The Off-Broadway run began at New World Stages in New York City in October, 2008 and ran through the very beginning of January, 2009, while featuring Constantine Maroulis, Paul Schoeffler, and Will Swenson in the cast. The production then transferred to Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre, first with previews beginning March 20, 2009, before officially opening on April 7, 2009.

Rock of Ages has been nominated for numerous awards; five Tony Awards – Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Constantine Maroulis, Best Direction of a Musical for Kristin Hanggi, Best Costume Design for Gregory Gale, and Best Sound Design for Peter Hylenski; two Drama League nominations – Distinguished Production of a Musical and Distinguished Performance for Constantine Maroulis; two Outer Critics Circle Awards – Outstanding New Broadway Musical and Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical for Wesley Taylor.

With the lyrical genius of bands such as Twisted Sister and Asia being completely wasted on the young ones, the show’s abundance of sexy groupies and scenes set in a strip club, and the immature delivery of some very mature content, it is probably best to plan for a babysitter to watch the kids when you come to see Rock of Ages.

Contrary to the bands or orchestras in other shows, the Rock of Ages band has significant time on stage as an actual part of the show – as Stacee's back up band they are always there playing, dressed as your typical metal heads. Additionally, one of the guitarists in the band is Joel Hoekstra, a member of Night Ranger whose song Sister Christian is also performed in the show.

Get your Rock of Ages tickets now and spend an evening reliving those crazy days at the Atkinson Theatre in New York. For those who were teens in the late ‘80s, and fans of the hair bands of that time, this is a show that you absolutely need to experience.
