In a very playful manner, Passing Strange puts forward some of the big questions that have set adolescent souls yearning for centuries. There are many questions that need to be answered at times, like how to discover and be true to your convictions, how to live a meaningful life and how to find the right understanding during difficult situations. It is a journey towards personal and artistic authenticity. The play is a story of a young black bohemian, who abandons his roots in search for the “real life”. He takes a journey to Europe to begin his search. During this phase of his life, he discovers a world of sex, drugs, rock and roll and art revolutionaries. There he begins to identity the true meaning of home.
The play is exuberant, inventive, funny, excellent songs and full of heart lyrics. Moreover the terrific casts are known for delivering perfectly pitched comic performances. Behind the success of this play are the soulful lyrics and overflowing music with passion. We get to know the black, middle-class America to Amsterdam and Berlin. The play begins with Stew narrating the story from a podium, playing guitar and banjo; he carries the story forward through song and verse.
"The cast of Passing Strange was spontaneous. A motley cast of characters in Passing Strange help rescue all the birds in the city and everyone’s dreams design. Passing Strange was the extensive reliable show I have ever seen! The characters are beautifully acted."
