Oleanna is a David Mamet work that explores the power struggle between a distracted male college professor and a struggling female college student and challenges the audience to decide where the line for political correctness should fall in a play that is sure to leave the sexes arguing the entire during intermission.

Carol comes to John’s office in an unscheduled visit because she is worried about her grade. John is juggling his nearing tenure with plans to purchase a house. She expresses her concern and her perceived disadvantages as he talks over her head, never quite answering her questions. She wants facts and he wants concepts. This is the pattern that develops with whoever is in charge talking over and at the other person, failing to truly communicate, which is ironically what John strives to do with his students.
His failings and her awakening to the power of her position, as a female alone in a room with a male professor who uses a strong hand to prevent her from leaving in one episode of hysteria as she tries to come to grips with her own intellectual failings, prove to be his demise.
Everything he is excited about, the security of tenure and the chance to grow strong roots in a new home, is put at stake and lost as she returns in the third act against the advisement of the board with allegations of sexual harassment and attempted rape. She attempts to blackmail him as well, but finds that she can only push him so far within the confines of power in the system before he will step outside it.
Oleanna is a compelling story that question the audience, often times along gender lines, as the terse style leaves the audience no place to hide but to face the situation and decide who is right and who is wrong, or perhaps whose wrong is worse.
