While the story explores the challenges of a seemingly standard suburban household, Next to Normal deals with a mother struggling with a worsening bipolar disorder and how the illness affects her family. With electrifying lyrics and an energetic score of more than thirty original songs, Next to Normal examines just how far two parents will go to stay sane and keeping their family together, while dealing with such everyday issues as suburban life, suicide, grieving a loss, drug abuse, and modern-day psychiatry ethics.

With the book and lyrics written by Brian Yorkey, and the music provided by Tom Kitt, Next to Normal has been nominated for a total of eleven Tony Awards, including Best Musical; winning three Tony Awards in 2009 for Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley. Before its off-Broadway debut in 2008, Next to Normal had already won the Outer Critics' Circle Award for Outstanding Score and received nominations for Drama Desk Awards for Outstanding Actress (Alice Ripley) and Outstanding Score. Next to Normal initially played at the Arena Stage in Crystal City, Virginia from November 2008 to January 2009, before opening on Broadway in April 2009.

This musical places the audience inside the hearts and minds of each character, while presenting the family’s story with heartfelt feelings of sympathy and love. Performed on a three-level set – one for the family’s home, school, and doctor’s office – Next to Normal is a fast-paced show that will hold the audience’s attention from beginning to end.
