About New York City Ballet

New York City Ballet was established in 1948 by choreographer George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein along with musical director Leon Barzin. During the initial years it was called the Ballet Society, but in 1948 the name was changed after it became the resident company of City Center of Music and Drama. The Company shifted to the New York State Theater, which was contrived by Philip Johnson, to the specifications of Mr. Balanchine on April 20, 1964. After the shift, the ballet company became the first of its kind in the United States to have two permanent venue engagements: one at Lincoln Center's New York State Theater on 63rd Street in Manhattan, and another at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, in Saratoga Springs, NY.

After the move to the State Theater, the repertoire consisted mainly of works created by Balanchine, who stayed as its ballet master until his death in 1983. His brilliant work was complemented by those of choreographer Jerome Robbins, who re-worked his connection with the company in 1969. New York City Ballet popularly referred to as City Ballet, still has the biggest collection of ballets than any American ballet company. It frequently stages 60 ballets or more in its winter and spring seasons at Lincoln Center each year, and 20 or more ballets in its summer season in Saratoga Springs. The NYC Ballet has showcased The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream and many more from its rich repertoire. Since the time it came into being, the New York City Ballet has showcased the talents of great artists including Jacques d'Amboise, Maria Tallchief, Diana Adams, Edward Villella, Melissa Hayden, Jillana, Gelsey Kirkland, Conrad Ludlow, Suzanne Farrell, Allegra Kent, Tanaquil LeClerq, Darci Kistler, and Peter Martins.

In the present scenario the Company has more or less 90 dancers, a repertory of over 150 works, chiefly choreographed by Balanchine(he died in 1983), Robbins and Peter Martins. The School of American Ballet, the official school of New York City Ballet, is flourishing in its home in The Samuel B. & David Rose Building at Lincoln Center with registration of over 350 aspiring dancers from nearly every state in the nation and around the world.
