About Misalliance

Born in Dublin in 1856, George Bernard Shaw is undoubtedly one of the greatest playwrights of the 20th century. He was the winner of the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature. His other famous work includes The Admirable Bashville, Man and Superman, John Bull's Other Island, How He Lied to Her Husband, Major Barbara, The Doctor's Dilemma, Geneva, In Good King Charles' Golden Days and this is just a glimpse of the long list.

In this play, Misalliance, the writer very nicely depicts the tension prevailing in the society that rules the Victorian era. There were tensions between rich and poor, between educated and uneducated, between old and young. Misalliance brings a true picture of England during that era. In fact, Misalliance is the follow up of George Bernard Shaw's play, 'Getting Married'. It tells the story of the new women who were trying to escape from the clutches of Victorian standards of helplessness, inactivity, stuffy propriety and non participation in politics or general affairs. It highlights the instinct of attraction that are present in people from all groups, background and sex. Be it for a mere second or for a life time, getting attracted to someone is common.

It reconstructs an eventful day that happens in the life of an upper middle class English family residing in Hindhead, Surrey. The characterizations of the play is an array of an unbelievable scale. All the major characters from the play are models of hypocrisy. The prominent characters are Mr and Mrs Tarleton, Bentley Summerhays, Hypatia Tarleton, Lord Summerhays, John Tarleton,Harris Berlinsky, Joey Percival, Lina Szczepanowska and Gunner among others.

The play begins when a group of people gather at Mr Tarleton's home on a summer weekend. Most of the guest gets attracted to the host's daughter, Hypatia Tarleton. She is engaged to Bentley Summerhays and was proposed by the elderly and wealthy Lord Summerhays. But what Miss Tarleton wants is some real adventure in life. The get together party takes an interesting turn when two unexpected guests, Joey Percival and Lina Szczepanowska come crashing down in an aircraft. While Miss Tarleton gets attracted to Joey Percival, the male section start trying their luck to impress Lina Szczepanowska.

During some hours there are as many as eight marriage proposals offered for considerations. Men want an obedient women as their wife. But interestingly they desire for a strong woman who can match them. This idea was embodied in the character of Lina Szczepanowska. She rejects all the marriage proposals as she wants to retain her independence - financially, intellectually and bodily.

Do not miss the adventure at Tarleton's house where all are invited for a robust hearty laugh. Buy your tickets now before it gets too late.
