Based on P.L. Travers' stories and the classic Disney film, Mary Poppins brings the story of the Banks family and their magical nanny to life on the big stage. Featuring Oscar-winning songs from the movie, this enchanting musical not only promotes the power of the family, but also joyful childhood memories.
You know the story; the Banks children, Jane and Michael, are behaving poorly which causes their parents to search for a nanny. While the children have their own idea of the sort of caretaker they should get, their parents agree they need to find someone strict for the job. Enter Mary Poppins, and the Banks’ feel that the young woman may be exactly what they are looking for, even if in a most peculiar way. While Mary leads the children on many a memorable and magical adventure, the children are not the only ones she ends up teaching a thing or two; even grown-ups learn that anything can happen if you let it, which is the main theme throughout Mary Poppins.
Mary Poppins, A Walt Disney Theatrical, is based on the series of children's books from P. L. Travers, in addition to the 1964 movie from Disney. Having opened in December of 2004, the West End production received two Olivier Awards – one for Best Actress in a Musical, and another for Best Theatre Choreography. The stage show showcases the Academy Award winning music and lyrics of the Sherman Brothers, along with some additional works from George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
Mary Poppins opened on Broadway in November of 2006; with an almost identical creative team and only small changes made from the West End version, the Broadway version received seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, while winning the Tony for Best Scenic Design.
The stage version of Mary Poppins is a combination of various portions of film and all of the books, while parts of the books that had been omitted from the film were added back to the stage version, such as the walking statue and the ladders rising to the stars, others were removed, such as the scene where Uncle Albert is stuck on the ceiling, laughing.
All in all, Mary Poppins is one of Broadway’s best bets to entertain the entire family. Get your tickets and take the kids to New York to enjoy this heartwarming show at the New Amsterdam Theatre.
