About Manon Lescaut

The first act takes place at Amiens. There are people moving around in front of the inn, there are a bunch of students waiting for the girls to come from work. The students act as a chorus. One of the students Edmund starts to sing about youthful pleasure. As he sings the girls come back. Des Grieux comes in, but is somber and does not join the other students. Rest of the students jest with him. Manon and Lescaut come down from the coach. It seems that Des Grieux is enamored with Manon, he approaches her after Lescaut has entered the inn. Manon assures Des Grieux that she will meet him later. The students are witness to the scene, and they laugh pointing towards them gaily. Lescaut comes back with Geronte, who is also bewitched by Manon. He feels that she is being wasted and tells that when Lescaut is busy playing cards, he plans to carry her off. Edmund overhears this, and tells Des Grieux to go off with Manon himself in the old roue´'s post-chaise. Manon comes, and flirts with Des Grieux, and then they run away.

Geronte and Lescaut come on the scene as the couple vanishs, and Lescaut suggests that they follow them as quickly as possible to Paris.

The Act II opens in a room in Paris. We come to know that Manon, after leaving Des Grieux, is living as the mistress of Geronte in a room. She left Des Grieux as he was not very rich and his money got over. While the hairdresser is arranging her hair, she talks with Lescaut. It seems that she is not happy with her new situation, her new beau is old and a boring person. Singers enter to divert her attention and to amuse her. Then Geronte along with the dance master enters the room. They dance for a while, and then the men go to amble along the boulevards. Manon is alone, and suddenly Des Grieux makes an appearance. As they confess their love for each other, Geronte returns. He sees the lovers, and reminds Manon of all that he has given her. Manon replies saying that she cannot love him. Geronte bows and leaves them. The lovers feel that now they have the freedom to live together, and they rejoice. While they are about to leave Manon balks at the idea of leaving her jewels and pretty frocks. Lescaut enters and tells them to leave as early as possible. While leaving, Manon grabs her jewels and rushes towards the door. The door is locked and soldiers appear to arrest her. While trying to escape the soldiers, she drops the jewels at Geronte's feet. Manon is taken away, and Des Grieux is not allowed to follow her

In act three we see that Manon is in prison. Lescaut and Des Grieux talk to her through the bars and come to know that she is to be expatriated to America. Two of them Lescaut and Des Grieux try to rescue her but in vain. The captain of the ship sees Des Grieux's misery, and allows him to board the ship. In the last act we see that the couple have reached somewhere near New Orleans. Manon and Des Grieux are tired; they do not know where to go. Seeing Manon's condition, Des Grieux goes in search of water for her. Meanwhile Manon feels that Des Grieux has left her for good and she looses her will to live. Des Grieux returns and calls out her name, tries to awaken her but she dies in his arms.
