The Little Mermaid has gone from Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale to Disney’s magical 1989 animated film to its latest reincarnation, a hit Broadway show.

Little Mermaid: Background

Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway in New York brings the classic story of the mermaid Ariel and her love for Prince Eric. A set designed by George Tsypin is alive with colorful lighting, tremendous sculptures and a sense of translucence that brings the audience to the under the sea. Songs by the late Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and music by Alan Menken bring Doug Wright’s musical book to life.

Francesca Zambello stars as Ariel. Twenty-five-year-old Zambello is fresh off her groundbreaking role as Christine Daae in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom-The Las Vegas Spectacular. She is joined by Sean Palmer as Prince Eric, Cody Hanford and J.J. Singleton as her dearest friend Flounder, Norm Lewis as her father King Triton, and Sherie Rene Scott as the villain Ursala, and Titus Burgess as Sebastian.

The musical replaces Disney’s Theatrical’s Beauty and the Beast on the Lunt-Fontanne stage. The Little Mermaid had a tryout run before coming to Broadway, playing at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts’ Ellie Caulkins Opera House for six weeks in the summer of 2007. Every seat of the 95,000-seat opera house was sold out for every show.
