Lion King

The Lion King is the tale one of a young lion cub living in the flourishing African Pride Lands. As a prince born into the royal family, Simba spends his time exploring the never-ending grasslands and looking up to his kingly father, Mufasa, and although mature beyond his years, the cub also youthfully avoids the responsibility he has inherited given his position in life. Following a terrible tragedy, brought about by Simba’s wicked uncle Scar and responsible for his father’s death, the young prince flees the Pride Lands, leaving his grief and life as he knew it behind him. During his journey, Simba makes two very funny and unlikely friends, which help him to deal with starting a new life. Between the burdens of what he knows his rightful responsibility to be and a desperate plea from home, the now ravaged Pride Lands, Simba must return to battle a formidable foe, en route to fulfilling his destiny to become king. >> More alt

About Lion King

A vivid and exciting tale from the great creators at Disney, The Lion King is a story of redemption and love which families can appreciate and enjoy. The winner of six 1998 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, this lively stage interpretation of the Academy Award-winning 1994 Disney film incorporates an award-winning score and innovative puppetry to bring the classic story of Simba and other inhabitants of the African Pride Lands to life.

With such unforgettable tunes as Elton John and Tim Rice’s Oscar-winning Can You Feel the Love Tonight, and the eye-popping displays of exotic African wildlife being brought to life onstage through music containing pulsing primal African rhythms, it is quite obvious why The Lion King has won six Tony Awards.

The Lion King debuted at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 8, 1997, before becoming an immediate success with its premier on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater – first in previews on October 15, 1997, and then with its official opening on November 13, 1997. In June of 2006, The Lion King was moved to the Minskoff Theatre in order to make way for the musical version of Mary Poppins; the musical remains there to this day and has become Broadway's ninth longest-running show in history.

While both Simba’s journey into the elephant graveyard and the death of his father may be a bit unnerving to younger viewers, the stage presentation is no more so than the original movie. If the children made it through the big screen version, then there should be no concern of seeing it live, especially since Disney productions are always delivered in such a way that even the serious and less lighthearted topics are family friendly.

Between the intense physical work on stage and its numerous visual surprises, this musical will hold everyone’s attention from curtain to curtain. The whole family will truly appreciate tickets to see The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre in New York, so get them right away and surprise everyone with this wonderful gift, especially for the holiday season.
