The popular opera La Traviata is based on the novel La dame aux Came´lias by Alexandre Dumas. The opera by Giuseppe Verdi is presented in three acts and it deals with the concept of fallen women. Literally the name of the opera La Traviata means The Woman Who Strayed. The opera was performed for the first time on March 6, 1853 at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice. The opera is hugely popular in the present time too and according to Opera America it is the third most performed opera in North America.
In act one, the famous courtesan Violetta Valery is shown greeting her guests at the party. She has just recovered from an illness, and to celebrate the recovery she has thrown a lavish party at her Parisian residence. One of the guests, Gaston, who is a Count has brought along a friend, the young nobleman Alfredo Germont, who had been admiring the hostess for the past one year. After being introduced, he shows his care for her delicate health and immediately expresses his love for her too. Violetta does not return his feelings, instead gives him a camellia, asking him to return after the flower has wilted. After the part Violetta thinks about the proposal and weighs the pros and cons of a real relationship with true love.
