Gioacchino Rossini composed this drama when he was just 25 years old. He composed it immediately after the success of ‘The Barber of Seville’, the year before. La Cenerentola, was finished in just three weeks. The masterpiece is considered to have some of the finest writing by Rossini, of all times. An overture from ‘La gazzetta’ as well as a small portion of an aria from The Barber Of Sevielle was reused in this particular creation.
Luca Agolini took the responsibility of writing the secco recitatives as well as the three famous numbers, Alidoro's "Vasto teatro e il mondo", Clorida's "Sventurata!" and the chorus "Ah, della bella incognita." Rossini even wrote a bravura replacement, "La del ciel nel l'arcanno profondo" for the purpose of a revival in Rome, in the year 1820.
When the opera was first inaugurated, it was received with hostility. But later, it became popular all over the world. It reached Italy in the year 1819, London in the year 1820 and New York in the year 1826. Not to mention the popularity that it managed to achieve in Italy... It was amazing.
After the era of the 1960s, a period of re-birth and renaissance was seen in terms of all the work that was crafted by this great composer. An all-together fresh batch of mezzo-sopranos and contraltos like Teresa Berganza, Patricia Kern, Della Jones, Cecilia Bartoli, Ewa Podles, Jennifer Larmore, Kathleen Kuhlmann, Agnes Baltsa, Joyce DiDonato, Frederica von Stade, Lucia Valentini Terrani, Susanne Marsee, Bernadette Cullen, Ann Murray and Vivica Genaux ensured that his work remains famous as well as popular all over the world.
A lot of changes were implemented that deviate from the current creation to the traditional fairy tale in La Cenerentola. It was because of the fact that Rossini had selected the non-magical version of the story (which was completely different from the original source), due to the unavailability of “special effects” at that time. Now the creation is totally changed. To view the next performances, go and grab the tickets now.
