About The La Cage Aux Folles
Movie fans will no this better as the Birdcage. The stage version is set in Georges’, the biological father, apartment and his drag club next door, La Cage aux Folles. The son, Jean-Michael, after making the announcement, asks Albin, the star of the drag show, his father’s lover, and his adoptive mother figure, to disappear for an evening.
The dinner at Georges begins with a comedy of errors. Jean-Michel’s biological mother cannot make it and Albin has shown up in drag thinking he would make a suitable replacement. The flamboyantly gay “maid” burns the dinner and the two families must dine out.
The change in dinner plans takes them to a local restaurant that is homosexual friendly and filled with patrons that are fans of the show at La Cage aux Folles. Albin is urged by the crowd to perform, and at the end of the number he removes his wig and exposes the deception.
Back at the apartment, the fiancé’s parents tries to convince Anne to leave Jean-Michel. However, once the parents are about to leave they see a throng of press outside waiting to photograph the notorious anti-homosexual figure visiting a well-known homosexual’s apartment. A deal is struck. The politician will be snuck by the press in drag through La Cage aux Folles.
