In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) is the latest play from one of the most celebrated young playwrights in the U.S., Sarah Ruhl. This play may sound like a sex farce and at times may joke like one, but this a story that applies humor to the confusion between the sexes that has caused so much trouble over the years.

The story takes place in 19th century rural New York just as electricity was making its way throughout the country. In the house of Dr. Giving, electricity is used to help treat women who display signs of hysteria and many other psychological conditions. The medicine is a metal apparatus that amounts to an early vibrator and the cure is an orgasm.
Two women are at the center of In the Next Room (or the vibrator play), Sabrina Daldry and Catherine Giving. Sabrina Daldry is a woman stuck in a marriage that lacks the emotional connections it once had. She is more than happy to continue with the treatments while her marriage remains stale. Catherine is the doctor’s wife. She has recently given birth to a child, but her milk has been deemed substandard and her feeding role has been handed over to a wet nurse.
Catherine feels robbed of her role as mother and she and her husband have become emotionally distant. Though she enjoys the treatment, she struck by the observations of another patient, a male artist, and wants to enjoy the sensation with her husband.
In the Next Room (or the vibrator play) explores this all too human desire for love and connection. The play may have its bit of sophomoric comedy, but it is far deeper than a summer comedy on the big screen.
