Fuerzabruta (Spanish for “Brute Force) is a show created by Diqui James and is another item in a reliable, if not exactly respected, genre: theater for people who don’t really care for theater. The show started on October 24, 2007 and runs until June 29, 2008. Audience members aren’t required to think, feel or sit down for the hour-long sensory bath at the Daryl Roth Theater. Standing there and gawking are all that is absolutely necessary; though jumping up and down and dancing are occasionally encouraged. Like Stomp and the Blue Man Group shows, Fuerzabruta is an immensely popular, no-language-barrier show; the best part, though, is the audience is also part of the experience.

About Fuerzabruta
At Stomp, Jump and Cirque du Soleil’s shows, the audience doesn’t really participate, but in Fuerzabruta, everyone does. Everyone is expected to be a part of the show and if someone is lucky enough, they’ll get a pizza box filled with powder and confetti smashed over their head. The show’s main figure is a strange man in white who starts the show by walking on a huge treadmill rolled into the middle of the audience; the walk turns to a jog, which turns to an all-out run. A shot is heard, blood is seen on his shirt and he falls down to the ground. The man lives to walk again past pieces of furniture thrown on the treadmill by some assistants, past other performers zipping by and falling off and through a lot of cardboard walls that fall apart as he smashes into them. At one point a huge shallow pool is lowered onto the audience with female performers splashing and sliding around in the water. There is also an aerial catfight done on a humongous circular curtain made up of a tinfoil-like material that is dropped and surrounds the audience.
