Finian’s Rainbow is the musical comedy that takes an Irishman with an extreme economic theory, a leprechaun, and a bigoted U.S. Senator and places them all in a political satire that offers extravagant laughs the entire way through.

Finian McLonergan is an Irish man in tune with the mystical creatures of the world and the holder of incredible calculations that conclude that America’s source of wealth springs from the effects of Fort Knox. He believes that the fort is responsible for the orange groves in Florida and the success of the factories in Detroit. He intends to take a pot of gold and his daughter Sharon to the U.S. to purchase a piece of property in Rainbow Valley in the state of Missitucky. There he will plant the pot of gold in the shadow of the magical fort and his wealth will spring from the ground in such excess that his daughter will never have to worry about money again.
Unfortunately, like the all best laid plans, things go awry. His daughter Sharon finds a love interest of her own in a boy named Woody, a racist U.S. Senator hatches his own plot to steal the pot, and a leprechaun named Og is in desperate search for his pot of gold before he turns human.
Finian’s rainbow mixes fantasy and politics and comes up with tremendous scores with music by Burton Lane and lyrics by E.Y. Harburg that remain as beguiling today as they were when the musical originally ran in 1947.
