About Doctor Atomic
The contemporary opera explores not the bomb itself, but, as is common in John Adams operas, the personalities that surround the event. Using texts derived from the declassified U.S. government documents and the communications from the scientists, government personnel, and military personnel the Peter Sellars creates the dialogue and recreates the anxieties of the momentous days. The factual text is supported with excerpts from the Bhagavad Gita, songs from the Tewa, sonnets from John Donne, and poetry from Muriel Rukeyser. Tickets to Doctor Atomic are presented with a terrific story that is as entertaining as it is grounded in reality.
The original cast debuted the production on October 1 in 2005 at the San Francisco Opera and starred Gerald Finley as Robert Oppenheimer, Kristine Jepson as Kitty Oppenheimer, Eric Owens as General Leslie Groves, and Richard Paul Fink as Edward Teller. The opening night tickets saw a contemporary story told in a classic form not generally associated with the 20th or 21st century.
The opera also drew its share of criticism, coming from the scientific community for the inaccuracies in some of the libretto and from those who wonder if Robert Oppenheimer would have enjoyed tickets to Doctor Atomic.
