Die Fledermaus is an opera by John Strauss II. The first source for the opera was a satirical comedy written by the German dramatist Das Gefangins and Julius Roderich Benedix. The other source was referred to the entertainment drama written by Ludovic Halevy and Henri Meilhac. It was named La reveillon. The play was transformed by Carl Heffner into a non-musical drama. This was made for getting produced in Vienna. Reveillon is a custom of France that meant a supper party in the midnight. It gave rise to several problems that was sorted out by adapting the drama as play script for Johann Strauss. Viennese ball was introduced in the place of the custom of reveillon.
The version of Haffner was given to Richard Genee for adapting. Genee declared that he never knew Haffner and the script were solely transformed by him. The play was shown for the first time in an Austrian theater named Theater an der Wien in Vienna. It was very popular in North America. The first act of the play was named Eisenstein apartment. The character named Baron von Eisenstein was condemned to prison. He insulted an officer which led him to face such consequence. Throughout the act every member were telling lies to hide their actual motive of joining the ball. The act had Eisenstein, his wife named Rosalinde, her admirer Alfred, the maid Adele and Baron’s friend Falke. The last character that appeared in the act was the prison’s governor named Frank.
The second was named ‘a summer house in the Villa Orlovsky’. Falke was in charge of the ball’s orchestra and had planned to take revenge from Eisenstein. Adele, Frank, Rosalinde and Eisenstein went to the ball in disguise. The prince welcomed all his guests as the ball started. During the ball, the people who came in disguise were introduced with each other. They started to suspect each other. The ball concluded with a remarkable way. The next act which was the concluding act of the drama was in Governor Falke’s prison office.
The third scene reached the full of bewilderment which was heightened by the excessively drunken jailer named Frosch. He drank to his heart’s content as the director of the jail was not present. Adele came with the support of Chevalier Chagrin. Alfred had a single wish which was to get out of jail. Rosalinde getting knowledge of her husband’s dishonesty was preparing to get divorce while Frank had not recovered from his intoxication. Ida with her sister Adele was locked. The uproar was elevated to the maximum position when Falke entered with the entire ball’s guests. He announced that the total incident was a revenge for Fledermaus.
The act was harmoniously set. All of them went out except Eisenstein. He had to remain in jail for eight days of his punishment. Die Fledermaus can be obtained in nearly a score of recordings. It has also been modified several times for television and cinema.
