‘Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti’ is an immensely famous opera buffa that had been composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Lorenzo da Ponte had written the Libretto for this brilliant masterpiece. The opera known as ‘Cosi’, in the English-speaking world, is one of the three most famous operas that were composed by Mozart, for which da Ponte wrote the libretto. The other two Mozart-creations were ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ and ‘Don Giovanni’.

About Cosi Fan Tutte
It has been said that Emperor Joseph II suggested that an opera like this should be written and composed. It was decided that Antonio Salieri would set the libretto to the music but he completed just a few parts of the first act and then broke off from the team. The title of the opera actually means, "Thus do all [women]" but it is normally translated as the other way around. People think that the meaning of the title is "Women are like that". Strange! Da Ponte had made use of this famous line "Così fan tutte le belle" earlier in his creation ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ as well. Three men, just before the commencement of the finale, sing the words.
The first performance transpired at the ‘Burg Theater’ in Vienna on January 26, in the year 1790. The storyline of the opera was not meant to offend the Viennese sensibilities at all but the opera was considered as ‘risqué’ throughout the time period of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The frequency of the performances started coming down and when it did appear, it was presented in one of several bowdlerized libretti.
After World War II, it again started gaining popularity. Now the opera is performed on a regular basis and even appears on the number fifteen spot on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America. A later version of ‘Così’ that was composed by Louis Nowra is a theater production that was set in the 1970s in a Melbourne mental hospital.
