Cat on a Hot Tin Roof tells the story of the decaying fabric of the Southern aristocracy and how the culture of lies and reputation has created a deep void that has left a family torn and its members unfulfilled. The Tennessee Williams play was nominated for a Tony in its first year in production, 1955, and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama that same year. The play takes place on a single night, when the Pollitt family has come together to celebrate their father’s birth day. The original cast succeeded in display in the decadence of the Southern society and the pitfalls hidden in its many crevices. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, no matter, which rendition, has never failed to sell tickets.

The focus of the story is Brick Pollitt, an aging football hero whose friend, Skip, has recently committed suicide. He mourns with a drink continuously in hand. His wife, Maggie, has worked hard to rise from the poverty of her childhood, but sees her efforts coming crashing down as the family, apart from Brick, position themselves to collect the fortunes of the Pollitt patriarch, “Big Daddy” Pollitt. One of the premises of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is that Big Daddy has cancer and this will likely be his last birthday. The rest of the family and doctors are keeping this news from him and his wife, “Big Mamma”, hoping to fall into the best light before his demise.
The overall theme of the play is mendacity, or simply put lies. Big Daddy’s family has lied to him as he has to them in the past, each trying to maintain a glowing reputation in the eyes of their peers and their family. While Brick may not be trying to manipulate his father like the rest of the Pollitt clan in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to the dismay of his life, the play alludes to perhaps more than just a friendly relationship between Brick and Skip.
Tennessee Williams uses the stage to explore the pervasiveness of sexism and homosexuality in a culture so proud and so macho. The original cast was directed by Elia Kazan who represented the true intentions of the play, but the film version in 1958 avoided the issues, perhaps due to pressure from codes of ethics at the time.
