About Carousel

The musical is well regarded among the different shows, by the theater community. Time magazine was so impressed by the musical that it named it as the best musical of the 20th century, “They set the standards for the 20th century musical.” Richard Rodgers in his autobiography ‘Musical Stages’ said it was his favorite musical.

Theresa Helburn and Lawrence Langner who were the producers of the blockbuster musical Oklahoma! came out with a proposal in front of Richard that they should turn Ferenc Molnar's play Liliom, into a musical. Richard was a little reluctant earlier but later he agreed to take on the project. According to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, it has been said that Carousel was their favorite collaboration.

They managed to create history with their extended music-and-dialog scenes. Scenes like the famous "bench scene", that included "If I Loved You", as well as the terrifying "Soliloquy" where Billy is shown as imagining his child of the future were a class act. The final song "You'll Never Walk Alone" has assumed the standards of a life that is related to both a funeral as well as a graduation.

Richard has managed to portray all kinds of societal attitudes as well as prejudices that are flourishing in society, with the help of his musical. Julie as well as Billy belongs to the working class. Enoch along with Carrie are featured in the middle class segment. The second act illuminates the differences between these two segments of society.

Domestic violence is correctly portrayed in the play. Billy both physically as well as mentally abused Julie. These acts have also been condemned by some of the characters but Julie has no problem with it. She endures his physical abuse because she loves him and understands his emotional pain.
