About Barber Of Seville

The opera that is based on the play, has been composed a lot of times in the past. Giovanni Paisiello composed one and Nicolas Isouard composed another in the year 1796. The composition by Giovanni triumphed for a longer period of time. But the version that was composed by Gioachino, alone managed to pass the difficult test of time and continued to be the mainstay for many years.

The composition by Gioachino is based on the first plays from the Figaro trilogy. A well-known French playwright Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais composed this trilogy. On the other hand the Opera, Le nozze di Figaro that was composed by Mozart came out some thirty years earlier than the above one, in the year 1786. It followed the second part of the Beaumarchais trilogy.

The original version of the opera was performed at the Comedie Francaise at the Tuileries Palace, Paris, in the year 1775. Gioachino is very popular and well known for being true to his style as well as for his quick work at compositions.

The composition “Barbiere di Siviglia” was finished in less than three weeks. But the fact is that the overture was taken from the two prior operas that were composed by Rossini. These operas were Aureliano in Palmira and Elisabetta, regina d'Inghilterra.

The first performance, contrary to everyone's expectations was a disastrous failure. It was performed for the first time on Feb 20, in the year 1816 and the reaction of the audience was not appreciative at all. It all transpired because of the fact that many of the audience members were supporters of Gioachino's rivals and they encouraged the other spectators not to appreciate the performance. The second performance had an all-together different fate. It became a huge success with the audience.

The opera has the honor of being in the list of the “20-Most-Performed Operas” in North America and is featured at the 5th position. An interesting fact to note is that the role of Rosina that was crafted for a mezzo-soprano (middle ranged soprano) has been sung by sopranos like Maria Callas, Beverly Sills, Lily Pons, Victoria de Los Angeles and Kathleen Battle. Currently, Teresa Berganza, Cecilia Bartoli, Joyce DiDonato and Jennifer Larmore have sung the role. To view the next performances go and grab the tickets now.
