Atlanta Ballet has a rich history behind it and has worked hard to become what it is today- one of the foremost professional ballet companies in the United States. The company was born under the auspices of Dorothy Alexander, who firmly believed that small communities like Atlanta at the time could also nurture its own dance company. The odds seemed insurmountable- larger, successful dance companies were folding all the time due to lack of funding but Alexander persisted and in 1929 she formed the Dorothy Alexander Concert Group, which had the distinction of holding their rehearsals in her garage.
With perseverance and patience the company gained professional recognition in 1967 and was renamed Atlanta Ballet. Alexander would guide the company for three more decades before handing the reigns over to Robert Barnett. Today the company runs under the artistic direction of John McFall and has the distinction of being the oldest professional dance company in the United States, the official ballet of the state of Georgia and the largest self-supporting arts organization in the state.
The history of Atlanta Ballet is also the history of Atlanta and many of the idiosyncrasies of the city along with its many styles and beauties are mirrored in the work of this company. Apart serving as an ambassador of the arts for the city of Atlanta, Atlanta Ballet has performed during the Olympic Arts Festival and has debuted in London at the millennium celebrations of the Royal Festival Hall. The company has toured extensively around the world and often collaborates with professional dancers from different countries.
Atlanta Ballet also prides itself in the many outreach programs they conduct in order to spread the appreciation for ballet and to give youngsters the opportunity to learn ballet and various other forms of dance. In 1996 the Center for Dance Education was set up to provide creative opportunities for adults and children alike, with students being given priority in auditions for productions like the Nutcracker.
Atlanta Ballet has always combined innovativeness with the elegance of classic ballet- their repertoire covers interpretations of Swan Lake and Dracula as well as collaborations with artists like The Indigo Girls.
