About The All My Sons

All My Sons was Miller’s second attempt to create a commercially successful play for Broadway. His first had failed and he decided that if this play did not sell enough tickets to avoid being a flop that he would take up another line of work. Luckily the play debuted in 1946 and won the Tony Award in 1947 for the Best Play. It also went on to play for 328 performances and would begin a career of controversy that would land the noted author in front of the House of Un-American Activities Committee in the 1950s, along with the shows director Elia Kazan.

Inspired by a story Miller saw in a newspaper and influenced by Henrik Ibsen’s The Wild Duck, All My Sons follows a few days in August 1946 at the household of Joe Keller. Joe has famously won his freedom for sending cracked parts to the Armed Forces in the World War II that would take 21 lives while his partner, Steven Deever, went to jail. His sons Larry and Chris both went to war. Chris came back angry that the domestic front has seemingly forgotten about the travesties of the battle of field and Larry has been MIA for three years.

Tickets to the play will see as the set open with Ann Deevers taking a nap. She was the sweetheart of Larry but has moved on with her life and fallen in love with Chris. Chris hopes to gain his mother’s approval to marry her, but she, Kate, still holds onto the notion that Larry will some day return. The story moves from the bubbling conflict between Kate, Chris, and Ann to Joe when it is announced that George, Ann’s brother is coming. George has visited his father and has realized his innocence and Joe’s guilt.

The truth bears its soul and the life of Chris, who has idealized his father, is broken, Joe commits suicide, and it is revealed that Ann has borne the knowledge that Larry committed suicide himself years back when he realized his father’s crime. In the final moments Joe rationalizes that he acted to save the factory and his family. All My Sons launched a couple of movie version and now a coupe of revivals that have allowed the public to once again purchase tickets to see the controversial play once more.

The latest revival features as an All Star cast. John Lithgow will play Joe Keller, Dianne West will play Kate, Patrick Wilson will play Chris, Katie Holmes will play Ann, and Simon McBurney will direct. The show will run from September 18, 2008 to January 11, 2009 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, replacing A Chorus Line and is already creating a stir for tickets.
