Aladdin is a classic "rags-to-riches" story. From a lowly beginning, the protagonist achieves an initial success, traverses major crisis’s seemingly taking away everything and in the climax triumphs over adversity to win stable and enduring accomplishment. His final success is possible only when he imbibes a degree of inner maturity while going through the turbulence.
Aladdin was helped by the genies. His despair at losing the beloved princess and her palace to the evil sorcerer compels him to go to a spiritual place. There he develops true strength. The wholeness he achieves is expressed by the re-establishment of his relationship with the princess. The reason for enduring fascination in the Aladdin story is our often-cataleptic gratitude to its underlying meaning. We identify our own effort to mature and develop in Aladdin's voyage.
The story details about a poor young man, Aladdin. A sorcerer to salvage an oil lamp from a magic cave recruits him. Sensing the sorcerer efforts to double-cross him, he gets away with the lamp. Aladdin discovers the lamp summons a surly jinni bound to serve the wish of the person holding the lamp. Aladdin gets rich and powerful with the aid of the djinn. He marries princess Badroulbadour. The sorcerer revisits and by clever tricks gets his hands on the lamp. Aladdin, still has a lesser, polite djinn in the ring loaned to him by the sorcerer. Helped by the lesser djinn, Aladdin recuperates his wife and the lamp.
French translator, Antoine Galland has incorporated this medieval Arabic tale into The Book of One Thousand and One Nights. He heard it from a Syrian storyteller (March 25, 1709). It is included in volumes IX and X of his book, published in 1710.
In England, Aladdin is a popular subject for pantomimes. Although listed as an Arabic tale because of its source, the characters are from China and Africa.
