About The Memphis Tigers

The Tigers are the University of Memphis’ sports teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division I and Conference USA. Some of the recent professional athletes from the school are: DeAngelo Williams of the Carolina Panthers, Stephen Gostowski of the New England Patriots, Isaac Bruce of the St. Louis Rams, Rodney Carney of the Philadelphia 76ers, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway of the Miami Heat, and Lorenzen Wright of the Atlanta Hawks. The school’s mascot is the Bengal Tiger; Tom II, the current mascot, goes to all football home games and can be seen at other school events throughout the year as a symbol of Tiger Athletics.

The football team first played in the fall of 1912, but no name was chosen. Early references called them the Blue and Gray Warriors. A student parade was held after the last game of the 1914 season; during which quite a few students shouted, “We fight like Tigers!” and the nickname was born. The current Tigers’ football team’s home games are played in Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, which is situated at the Mid-South Fairgrounds in Memphis. It’s the site of the annual Liberty Bowl; numerous attempts at professional sports in the city have been hosted there, along with other local football games and other gatherings. They made it to 4 bowl games from 2003-07. They made it to the Motor City Bowl in 2005 and were led by DeAngelo Williams, who was a senior All-American running back and the eventual NFL Carolina Panthers’ 1st-round draft pick.
