The Ryder Cup is a golf trophy competed for every other year in the Ryder Cup Matches by teams from Europe and the United States. This competition started in 1926 after an exhibition match of a team that represented American professionals against one that represented the British PGA on the East Course of the Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, UK. With early matches between the two sides even, the US dominated after the Second World War. This led to the decision in 1979 to extend the British and Irish team to all of Europe. The change was partly due to the success of Spanish golfers at the time, including Severiano Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido. The two men were the very first Spaniards to play in the Matches in 1979. Europe has been represented by players from Denmark, France, Sweden, Germany and Italy since. As a result, the competition has seen more competitive matches.
