The Verizon Heritage is a South Carolina’s only PGA Tour FedEx Cup event, which is recognized as one of the premier golf tournaments in the country. It is established and first played in 1969, and the venue has been the Harbor Town Golf Links at the Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

The Harbor Town course, which frequently appears on several "Best Courses" lists, was designed by famed golf course architect Pete Dye, with an assist from Jack Nicklaus. The Heritage Classic Foundation is the general sponsor of the Verizon Heritage, and provides the financial stability, guidance and direction to the tournament. The Foundation distributes revenue produced by the event to a wide variety of charitable organizations after each tournament, and universities and medical institutions. The Heritage Classic Foundation donated $1.55 million dollars in 2005, and in 2007, the Heritage Classic Foundation was honored to donate $1.8 million dollars, bringing the total to more than $16.6 million since it was organized. Verizon Heritage winners are Aaron Baddeley in 2006, Boo Weekley in 2007 and in 2008 again Boo Weekley, who has now joined Davis Love III and the late Payne Stewart as the only players in Verizon Heritage history to successfully defend their titles.
