Sony Open

The Sony Open has been most recently famous for the appearance in the field of a female LPGA Tour player, Michelle Wie, who teed it up at four of the tournaments since 2004. Her last appearance was in 2007, and a whole lot of Sony Open tickets were sold during that timeframe. And though she didn't make the cut in any of her tries, she provided a nice bit of excitement. >> More alt

About Sony Open

For 2008, a 17-year-old former classmate of the female golfer received a sponsor exemption much as Wie did in all four of her appearances. Alex Ching did the local area well, considering both he and Ms. Wie are from the state of Hawaii. Interest in the tournament continues to remain high, and a great many Sony Open tickets are sold because the style of play can be very interesting and the players that travel to Hawaii to compete in it always put on a good show.

Of historical note is the fact that in 1983, Isao Aoki became Japan's first winner of a tournament on the PGA Tour, winning the event by one stroke on the 72nd hole. Aoki had always been known as a good golfer and a local Japanese-American population supported the tournament that year, buying up a great many Sony Open tickets.

The 2007 tournament is notable for the fact that the second youngest player ever to make a 36 hole cut on the PGA Tour did so at the event. Tadd Fujikawa, playing as an amateur, the 16-year-old had a great day, making a 15 foot Eagle pot on the course’s 551-yard par-5 18th hole. Again, the fact that such a precocious youngster was doing so well at the tournament helped to propel second day sales of Sony Open tickets for the remainder of the tournament.

Since the beginning of the event all those years ago, there have only been four players who have won it multiple times. All four are well-known golfers, including Ernie Els and Lanny Wadkins, both of whom worked hard to win their tournaments and helped to sell a great many Sony Open tickets along the way. Other top golfers who have made the trek all the way out to Hawaii to compete and win the tournament include Vijay Singh and Lee Trevino.

The 18-hole tournament record -- as far as low score goes -- is held by Davis Love III, who shot an awesome 12 under par 60 on the par 72 course. His feet that day inspired a good many fans to return the next day and buy up even more Sony Open tickets.
