The event has a long history that can be traced back to 1992, when a tournament called the Houston Professional Golf event led to a following-year happening called the Houston Invitational and then the Houston Open for a number of years. Arnold Palmer took top honor at the 1957 event. Owing to its grand history, sales of Shell Houston Open tickets attract a large amount of interest.

Over that long history, the tournament has been held at a number of courses in the region, including on one occasion when it was played all the way over in Missouri City, Texas in 1973. The famous Australian golfer Bruce Crampton took it all that year, along the way moving sales of Shell Houston Open tickets to new heights, though the event went under a different name back then (the Houston Open).
Since 2003, the tournament has been played at Redstone, with it being contested before that over at the TPC at the Woodlands course from 1984 to 2002. It is a “stroke play” tournament, meaning that the players go head-to-head against each other, with the lowest aggregate score taking top prize and all others lining up behind. This format helps Shell Houston Open tickets sell quite briskly.
Historically, the lowest aggregate score record is held by three of the great names in golf. Lee Trevino, Curtis Strange and the still-active Vijay Singh all hold a low of 266 strokes over the course of play, with Singh also holding lowest “to par,” at 22 strokes under, which is exceptional, given the nature of the course. Sales of Shell Houston Open tickets reflect how popular Singh and other players today are.
Redstone Golf Club features a par 72 course that takes the PGA Tour pros on a nearly 7500 yard adventure, and current 2009 champion Paul Casey of England carded a strong game to Houston to win his first PGA Tour victory in 77 starts, winning in a playoff against American J. B. Holmes. He shot a final round 72 to finally win with an 11 under par, 277 total score, taking home over a million dollars in prize winnings and the hearts of a lot of fans who had put down good money for Shell Houston Open tickets.
Scheduled to begin on March 29 and run through April 4, 2010, the tournament will be offering a total prize purse of over 5.7 million dollars, with 1,026,000 or more going to the winner. Last year’s champion Casey is due to return to defend, and the field is sure to feature all of the biggest names in PGA golf, including Singh and Phil Mickelson.
