About Chevron World Challenge

The Chevron World Challenge consists of a sixteen main field which is also compromised of the defending champion. There are top eleven players that come in from the official world of golf rankings and there are four players that are sponsors exemptions which the Tiger Woods Foundation chooses. The Chevron World challenge is not a money tournament in the official sense on the PGA tour. Starting later this year (2009) the event will also begin to offer Official World Golf Ranking points. The field will also experience an increase to around eighteen players which will include the current batch of four major winners, and the top 11 as usual from the Official World golf Rankings, there will be the defending champion as well as two special exemption players which the Tiger Woods foundation will select.

The Chevron World Challenge was originally established by the Tiger Woods foundation and the proceeds of the Chevron World Challenge go to the charities which Tiger Woods is associated with. This is a very lucrative event for all the professionals who take part in the event. Later in 2007 the prize fund was set at $5.75 million. This is something that mirrors many official PGA tour events; however the fields here are around one hundred and fifty in contrast to the eighteen fields. The first price is $1.35 million and the last place award is $170,000. Tiger Woods always donates all of his prize money to his Tiger Woods Foundation. There was only one time i.e. in 2008 when Tiger Woods did not compete because of his knee surgery following his 2008 U.S. Open tournament victory, even though is the two time defending champion. However this year in 2009 he is expected to return and play.

Its going to be very interesting to see if Tiger Woods is in fact back in form for the Chevron World Challenge or will his knee injury get the better of him. Everyone knows that he is probably in good shape for the challenge but it will be interesting to watch him in action. There is also some speculation that he might not make it to the challenge but may of the gurus bet that he’s not going to miss it for the world.
