The tournament itself has a very long history, with the San Diego Open first being played way back in 1927. From 1930-1951 there was no tournament, though it's been played every year since then under a variety of different sponsor names. Regardless of such name changes, future Buick Invitational tickets would always be strong sellers. Probably the most famous early winter of the event was Arnold Palmer, who first took the title back in 1961.

There have been a number of different courses around San Diego that the tournament has been played on since its founding. Some of these include the San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, California and the Mission Valley Country Club, also in San Diego. Since 1968, the Event Has Been Played at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California. Once there, sales of what is now called Buick Invitational tickets were really strong.
The winner in that first year at Torrey Pines was golf Hall of Famer Tom Weiskopf. Additionally, golf Hall of Famer Gene Littler won the tournament in 1954 as an amateur, though he never again one as a professional -- finishing as runner-up three more times in 1969, 1974 and 1978. There have been a number of multiple winners of the tournament who have helped to sell Buick Invitational tickets through their efforts.
The all-time winningest golfer at the event is the incomparable golf legend Tiger Woods. Tiger has taken the title on six separate occasions, the most recent being the 2008 event. Trailing Woods in wins is another golf superstar, Phil Mickelson. The gentleman has taken three titles of his own, with the most recent being 2001. His battles with wood at the event have helped to sell a great many Buick Invitational tickets over the years.
Five other golfers in the event's history have taken the title twice, with the most famous of that group being Tom Watson, who earlier in 2009 finished as runner-up at the British Open at age 59, which is an exceptional feat. Tiger Woods himself has won this event four straight times from 2005-2008, which was a period when sales of Buick Invitational tickets were at their strongest.
For 2010, a strong field is again projected to be present and though sales of what won't be called Buick Invitational tickets -- the automaker, due to financial difficulties had to pull out of the event -- the tournament is in good hands and will call itself The Century Club of San Diego Invitational. No matter the name, this event promises an extremely strong purse of over $5 million plus the appearance by not only last year's winner, Nick Watney, but also the presence of Tiger Woods and others.
