The 2008 Summer officially known as the 'XXIX Games' will take place from August 8, 2008 to August 24, 2008. The opening ceremony will be commenced at 08:08:08 pm CST (12:08:08 UTC) at the Beijing National Stadium in Beijing, the capital city of the People's Republic of China. A sum total of 302 events will take place in 28 sports. At least 10,500 athletes shall participate in this world famous sports event.
On 13th July, 2001 Beijing won the opportunity to be the host city through an exhaustive ballot of the 112th International Committee (IOC) session in Moscow after defeating other heavyweight competitors- Toronto (Canada), Paris (France), Istanbul (Turkey) and Osaka (Japan). This time the official logo has been entitled 'Dancing Beijing', featuring a stylized calligraphic character 'jing' which refers the host city.
The mascots of Beijing 2008 are the five Fuwa, each represents one color of the Olympic rings. These five Fuwa represent four popular animals of China: the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow and the Flame.
The slogan, 'One World, One Dream' summons the world to unite in the spirit of the games. It was chosen from over 210,000 entries submitted around the world. Main venues for various sports events will be the Beijing National Stadium, Beijing National Indoor Stadium, Beijing National Aquatics Center, Green Convention Center, Green and Beijing Wukesong Culture & Sports Center.
Beijing National Stadium
The centerpiece of the 2008 Summer Games will be held at the Beijing National Stadium, nicknamed the 'Bird Nest' because of its nest-like structure. The National Stadium will feature a lattice-like concrete body forming the stadium bowl and will have a seating capacity of 80,000. The Beijing National Stadium will be the site of the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the athletics events and soccer finals.
2008 Torch Relay The plans of the torch relay were announced on 26th April, 2007, in Beijing. The relay with the theme 'Journey of Harmony' will last for 130 days carrying the torch 137,000 km, the longest distance of any torch relay. It will commence on 25th March, 2008 in Olympia, Greece. From there, it will travel across Greece to Panathinaiko Stadium in Athens and then reach Beijing on 31st March. From Beijing, the torch will follow a route passing through every
