They finished the first season with 60 losses, only 12 wins and 72 points. The 1973-74 season ended up with 19-41-18 record. The 1974-75 season was the first NHL playoff game for the Islanders. They scored 33 playoff wins in that season. During that season the team was led by Denis Potvin, Clark Gilles and Billy Smith. Despite its initial failure, Islanders stood as a strong contender by winning four consecutive Stanley Cup Championships in the early 1980s.

The inexperienced Islanders became a big threat to most of the heavy favourites of that time. In the 1974-75 season, they had to face the stronger team, New York Rangers in the first round. But they defeated the Rangers with a high spirit. Beside this, the team had to defend themselves from many other strong favourites such as Pittsburg Penguins, Flyers and Philadelphia team. Unfortunately, the Islanders could not make it to the top. The 1978-79 season was the Islanders best 51-15-14 record. After a long series of experimental games within a season, finally the team reached to Stanley Cup finals in 1980.
