The Washington Capitals are an NHL team based in Washington, D.C. and are members of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference. Their home games are played in downtown Washington’s Verizon Center. The Capitals were formed in the summer of 1972 when contractor and NBA team owner Abe Pollin won the team over 11 other applicants for an NHL expansion team. The new team was expected to play in the Capital Center in Landover, MD. The team joined the NHL in the 1974/75 season. Their first general manager was Milt Schmidt and their first coach was Jimmy Anderson; their first game was played against the New York Rangers, which the Caps lost. Their first year would continue to be tough on the team; it would break and even set league records for ineffectuality.

The team revealed their new uniforms on June 22, 2007; the unveiling coincided with the NHL Entry Draft and the league-wide adjustment to the Reebok-designed uniform system for the 2007/08 season. The change brought back the red, white and blue color scheme they originally used from 1974 to 1995. Their new main logo is evocative of the team’s original logo; it even has a hockey stick formed by the letter “t” and includes a new element the original logo didn’t have: 3 stars that represent Maryland, Virginia and DC. The stars obviously refer to DC’s flag, which is based on the shield of George Washington’s family coat of arms. The Caps won the Southeast Division title in January 2008 for the first time since the 2000/01 season; they beat out the Carolina Hurricanes for the division title in the last game of the season. The Caps then took on the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round and even forced a Game 7 after being beaten 3 games to 1 in the series. They lost to the Flyers, though, in overtime after 2 questionable calls led to the Flyers’ second and game-winning goals.
