The Capitals currently sit comfortably atop the Southeast Division, and are considered one of the best teams in the NHL at this point, just past the halfway mark of the season. With 76 points and a 35-12-6 record, Washington has also taken over first place in the East, and is third across the entire NHL. After San Jose and Chicago, the Caps have really come alive – 9-1-0 in their last ten games and currently on an eight-game win streak – lending proof that this team is truly one to look out for come playoff time.

The obvious center of attention for the Capitals is their star leftwing, Alex Ovechkin. While Ovechkin (73 points – 34 goals, 39 assists, +32 plus/minus) leads Washington across the offensive stat board, he is also ranked 2nd in the NHL in both points and goals, 1st in the plus/minus column, and 5th in the league in assists. Simply put, Alex is a scoring machine.
Surprising to some, the Caps do actually have other offensive weapons as well. Defenseman Mike Green (51 points, 12 goals) is tied with Ovechkin for the team lead in assists, while star center Nicklas Backstrom is second only to Ovechkin with 58 points (8th in NHL) on 21 goals and 37 assists. Rounding out the 50-and-over club is left-winger Alexander Semin who has 53 points on his 25 goals (9th in NHL) and 28 assists. Ranked first in the NHL, at 3.83 goals per game, this team can score!
Although recently hindered by an injury and not seeing quite as much time as goaltender Jose Theodore (16-7-4, 2.85 GAA, .906 save %), second-year keeper Semon Varlemov has put up some very impressive numbers, and may be on the verge of taking the top spot upon his return sometime soon, and maybe into the playoffs as he did last season. At 12-1-2, with a goals against average of 2.21, and save percentage of .924, this keeper is great and could be the difference in how far Washington goes once playoff time rolls around.
Always on the attack, Ovechkin and his Caps will always be looking to outscore their opponent. With firepower like this, it should not surprise anybody if they repeat as division champs and go far into the playoffs once again. This is a team that no one should ever miss if given the opportunity. Make the opportunity now, get your Washington Capitals tickets, and come see one of the best shows in the NHL.
With a superstar like Ovechkin lacing up the skates, the world is truly the Capitals’ oyster. If 2008 and 2009 are any indication – they took the division both years and played in the postseason – things may finally come together nicely and with a possible Stanley Cup. Throw newly-acquired forward Sergei Fedorov and all signs are definitely pointing to that possibility.
