The Coyotes are currently in second place in the Pacific Division with 67 points and 31-18-5 record, which is also good enough to place Phoenix in 4th place in the Western Conference and 7th in the NHL.

Phoenix’ success up to this point in the season is due largely in part to their balanced offensive output; three different players lead the key offensive categories and nine players are above 20 points, three of which are defensemen. Rightwing Shane Doan (16 goals, 23 assists) leads the team in points with 39, center Matthew Lombardi (35 points, 9 goals) leads the team in assists with 26, and rightwing Scottie Upshall (32 points, 14 assists) tops the goal list with 18. Rounding out the top nine scorers are rightwing Radim Vrbata (32), defensemen Ed Jovanovski and Keith Yandle (both with 27), centers Robert Lang and Martin Hanzal (both with 25), and defenseman Adrian Aucoin (22), who all need to keep it up during the second half of the season if Phoenix is to remain a threat.
An additionally important part of the Phoenix Coyotes’ success has been the play of both goaltenders, number one Ilya Bryzgalov and backup Jason LaBarbera. Bryzgalov (28-14-4, 2.35 GAA, .918 save %) has been strong most of the season; ranking 11th in the NHL in goals against average, tied for 12th in save percentage, and tied for 5th in the league’s win column. Although not a common occurrence, replacing Bryzgalov with LaBarbera (3-4-1, 2.49 GAA, .916 save %) is a change the team feels comfortable making when necessary, and one which could even become permanent if the situation ever warrants.
This is a good team, and one which has the talent to raise some eyebrows come playoff time in March. Fans should make sure they have their tickets now in order to watch as the Phoenix Coyotes finish the second half of the season strong and have a potentially long playoff run as well.
The Phoenix Coyotes – despite all the financial issues surrounding the club – had a decent 2009 campaign when one considers how truly stretched by off-ice bad news the club seemed to be at times. Finishing nearly above .500, the promise of Phoenix Coyotes tickets is also the promise of exciting hockey from the likes of Jason LaBarbera and Jim Vandermeer, both offseason acquisitions. It’s just possible another playoff could be in the making.
