The New York Islanders are quietly turning some heads as of late, and although currently in fifth place in the Atlantic Division with 54 points based on their 23-22-8 record, they are only one point out of third in the division and a few wins away from contending for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

With rightwing Kyle Okposo leading the Isles in scoring (36 points) and assists (24), and rookie, and anticipated franchise player, center John Tavares (33 points, 17 goals) right behind him at the top of the scoring sheet, add leftwing Matt Moulson (32 points), who leads the team with 19 goals, and this team seems to have enough offensive firepower to make a run for the postseason.
It remains up to the New York Islanders defense to keep the other side of the scoreboard low in order for them to win more games. Headed by two-way defender Mark Streit, who is currently 4th on the team in scoring with 29 points, last season’s leading scorer can concentrate more on leading the defense with Okposo, Tavares, and Moulson leading the offense.
Goalkeeper Dwayne Roloson (19-9-6 record, 2.81 goals against average, .909 save %) is holding his own with a adequate performance to this point, but the Islanders need to get better backup goaltending from Martin Biron (2-11-2, 3.22 GAA, .900 save %) if they wish to truly compete and not counteract the offensive output of the top lines.
While overall progress is evident with the Islanders so far in 2010, consistency has been a problem with this young team prior to their recent run. With nine of their regular forwards still only 25 or younger, this was considered another season of growing pains on Long Island, so the fact that this Islanders team has been as competitive as it has is definitely a pleasant surprise. It will be interesting to see if they continue their progress in the second half of the season, so get tickets now and be there to see if they do.
With a 300 percent increase in the sales of New York Islanders tickets, other teams need to watch for the Islanders. The first overall draft pick of 2009, John Tavares, as well as the new core of young players, has the league and New York Islanders ticket holding fans hoping that the team will return to its winning tradition.
